Introduction

Every year we produce a Directory of International Non Governmental Organisations working in Vietnam in both English and in Vietnamese.

This Directory reflects the continuing growth of international participation in Viet Nam's development - more than 200 international NGOs are represented. The first year of publication was in 1991 - in response to the growing number of organisations providing humanitarian assistance and the need for information on which organisations were in the country, what activities they were involved in and where they were working. Over the years its format has changed somewhat as has the technology used to produce it but its aim remains the same:

  • to increase knowledge, in Viet Nam and overseas, about international NGOs working in Viet Nam, and to help foster communication among these NGOs, the Government of Viet Nam, local groups, and other international organisations.

1998 saw the evolution of the NGO Resource Centre Database for the production of the Directory. As such, targeted information contained in the Directory on organisations, sectors and provinces is available from the the Resource Centre in a variety of different reports.

The continuing success of the Directory (and our database) depends on the reliability of the information contained in it; which, in turn, depends on the NGO contributors. The content of each entry is the responsibility of the NGO concerned.

The Directory is a joint initiative of international NGOs working in Viet Nam and the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO); updating and printing are coordinated by the NGO Resource Centre in Ha Noi with assistance from the People's Aid Coordinatio Committee (PACCOM) and funded by donations from NGOs. It is suggested that NGOs who wish to be included in the Directory send us a voluntary contribution varying according to the scope of an agency's work and the size of its programme here.

We have tried to be inclusive; unfortunately, some NGOs currently active in Viet Nam may not have been included in the Directory. We apologise for any omissions, and welcome hearing from any NGOs wishing to be included in the next edition. These organisations are requested to fill out the questionnaire (see below) and return it to us or, in the case of out-dated entries, to send us a photocopy of their old entry, indicating updates and changes clearly. Where we have not received an update from an NGO for more than two years, we assume it has either withdrawn from the country or does not wish to be included in the Directory.

The note for each activity should include:

  • Brief description of the activity. If a project spans more than one sector, you may wish to split the project in more than one activity.
  • Sectoral classification of the activity.
  • Province(s) in which the activity is being carried out. Please do not write "several", etc. but specify - this will help us (and others) in accurately determining who is working where. For INGOs who work in a large number of provinces in Northern, Central or Southern Vietnam, we have used these categorises in the past. Due to the limits which this places on searching by province, we ask if you can give us specific province names for next year's edition. If your activities are targeted at the national level (e.g. Ministries) rather than a specific location in Vietnam, you may wish to use "National Level"
  • District(s) in which the activity is being carried out. Please don't write "several/all" but specify
  • Partner institution/organisation for the activity. This new information will be added to next year's edition.

14. Number of expatriate staff in Viet Nam; if none, please enter 0.

15. Number of Vietnamese staff in Viet Nam; if none, please enter 0.
